ABOUT ME

To me the journey of carving, which requires and creates energy, is just as important as the final work. That process of 'starting and finishing', inspires and disciplines me.

My mallet and chisel manipulate stone, in fragmented reflections of my environment; they create a repetitive rhythm of sound, like my footsteps when I go for my long walks.

I have travelled by foot through India, Spain – Camino de Santiago – and from my front door in Brighton to Lands End.

My drawings and carvings influence each other.

Studying and teaching drawing, the figurative has slowly dissolved into 'natural forms' when I carve.

Currently my work revolves around the non-geometric, the off–balanced, playing with gravity. This sets free a creative imagination, a freedom in form. These natural forms become drawings in stone.

I've been a member of the Sussex art scene for over 30 years now, leading the Skeleton workshops in Ditchling for nearly 20 years.

Education- Apprenticeship with letter-cutter John Skelton, Ditchling, Sussex 1991-4. Sir John Cass Art School, London, Fine art BA, 1987-91. Port Elizabeth Art School, South Africa, 1975-77.
